Onyx Cinema and our sister company Alumiq Productions are the first to have work featured on Technicolor’s Cinestyle Website! Featured from Onyx Cinema is the event promo video we filmed in Asia and from alumiq productions is our new wedding cinematography reel.
Onyx Cinema had a chance to work with preview versions of Technicolor’s new software, dubbed “Color Assist”, which is a fast color grading tool that is based on the same technology used on Hollywood productions. This is perfectly paired with their camera picture style named “Cinestyle”, which was released a while ago for the Canon DSLRs and has a version on the GoPro cameras.

We have been using the cinestyle picture style on many productions, including Otto Instruments and Aviation and about all of the none same day edit weddings we shoot. We chose to use the picture style because to capture as much information possible when it came to lighting situations with extreme contrast between highlights and shadows (for example, in the Asian event and in harsh sunlight in weddings) and for maximum creative control when coloring in post production.
The only issue with shooting in this picture style was that coloring the footage was much more time consuming and it was a bit of crapshoot experimenting with what worked best with the picture style. This is where Technicolor’s Color Assist comes in. A standalone application integrated with plug-ins for popular NLE software, we’re excited to continue shooting and coloring with the combination of Cinestyle and Color Assist on future shoots.
A more detailed post about our use of the picture style and Color Assist software is coming soon!
